The Basics of Our House
This 17-member vegan household is located in a quiet residential neighborhood just six blocks from both UT and Austin Community College. Because of its central location, Royal has attracted members from both campuses (and it houses a healthy number of non-students, too). Combine this fact with a wide range of ages, dietary preferences, and political outlooks, and you'll see Royal for what it is — a diverse household, rife with fascinating people and perspectives.
The house itself is aging, but full of character. Its common spaces are open and colorful, and windows line the walls. During the day, our house is flooded with sunlight, and the living room, with its big comfortable couches, becomes a hot spot for conversation and relaxation. In the evening, the dining room comes to life as residents take a seat and chat over a three-course vegan meal, every Sunday through Thursday. Throughout the rest of the day, the kitchen experiences constant use as residents cook together or prepare personal snacks. Personal rooms are divided into five singles and six doubles. Most have a loft, and all are spacious.
Our Community Structure
More than anything else, Royal is defined by its veganism. (Veganism is a lot like vegetarianism, only without diary or egg.) In practice, we do not buy any animal products, with the possible exception of honey, and our house meals are prepared purely vegan. Nonetheless, although our house is composed primarily of vegan/vegetarians, omnivores are more than welcome to live here, too. Currently, we have several omnivores living at Royal, and they thrive on soymilk and tofu salads as well as the rest of us.
Pets are allowed, but require a house vote. Usually Royal has at least one cat.
Everyone is expected to do at least five hours of house labor a week. An additional five hours will be done once a semester for labor holiday.
Amenities: Subscriptions to the New York Times and The New Yorker, a house computer, high speed Internet access in every room (as well as house-wide wireless access), a professional quality bike shed, a bungee swing, an entertainment room (with TV, DVD, VCR, and a dart board), central air conditioning, and an herb and vegetable garden. And now a peach tree.
